The whole of Apple's Podcasts library is now available on Amazon Echo devices and can be played by asking Alexa for particular shows or episodes.

In a similar move to how Apple Musicbecame available on Amazon Echo earlier this year, now Podcasts have come too.

Once set up, users can simply ask Alexa to play a podcast, and then also have more specific controls such as pausing, or skipping back and forth through episodes.

In testing, the Mac app also responded to new skills enabled through Amazon's Alexa iOS app, which officially supports and integrates with the Reverb app for iOS. The apps provide a convenient solution for Echo owners wishing to make Alexa available in, say, their office room or study, without having to buy an additional supporting device. My Macbook Pro was connected to Spectrum, and streamed the audio to my Echo; It worked fine for several weeks, then just quit working for no apparant reason. 😠 My Macbook Pro still plays the video, (Spectrum is my ISP) and it say's I'm connected to 'Echo' to stream the sound via 'Bluetooth', but the sound only comes through the Macbook Pro.

It works with Amazon Echo or Amazon Fire TV, and requires the latest versions of both iOS and the Alexa app. Currently it also only works within the US.

In the Amazon Alexa app on iOS, users need to first add a skill called Apple Podcasts.

Alexa can be too smart for your good. Alexa has wheedled her way into our homes, with many households now containing multiple Echo speakers, Fire TV dongles and other voice assistant devices. ‎Set up, manage, and control your Google Home, Google Nest, and Chromecast devices, plus thousands of connected home products like lights, cameras, thermostats, and more – all from the Google Home app. One view of your home. The Home tab gives you shortcuts for the things you do most, like playing.

From then on, it will work and respond to requests to play shows such as the weekly AppleInsider podcast. However, each request has to include the words 'on Apple Podcasts'.

To change that, users need to make Apple Podcasts be the default player. In the iOS Amazon Alexa app, a New Service has to be added under the Music & Podcasts, Services section.

When signed in with a US Apple ID, there is the option to Select Default Service and set it to Apple Podcasts.
